What Ole Miss Basketball Needs to Make March Madness in Chris Beard's First Season

 Ole Miss basketball coach Chris Beard has a history of winning quickly at his new stops. But leading the Rebels to March Madness in his first season will be a challenge. Here's a look at what Ole Miss needs to happen:

An elite defense: Beard's teams have a strong history of stifling the opposition. In seven full seasons as a Division I coach, Beard's teams have, on average, finished 19th out of 363 programs in KenPom's defensive efficiency metric.

Key transfers:Moussa Cisse and Brandon Murray are two key transfers who could help Ole Miss make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament. Cisse is a 7-foot center who averaged 12.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game at UCF last season. Murray is a 6-foot-5 guard who averaged 17.9 points and 4.4 rebounds per game at Utah last season.



A strong conference performance: The SEC is one of the toughest conferences in college basketball. Ole Miss will need to finish in the top half of the SEC standings to earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A late-season run: Ole Miss has a favorable schedule late in the season. The Rebels play four of their last six games at home, including games against Kentucky and Tennessee. If Ole Miss can win those games, it will go a long way towards securing a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
